Campaign against Human Trafficking-SouthShore will be presenting Monday, January 21st, its annual movie event in the Florida Room at Sun City Center’s central campus off of N. Pebble Beach Drive. This year’s showing is “Trade,” staring Academy Award winning actor, Kevin Kline. Kline portrays Sam, a Texas cop turned investigator, who is searching for his missing daughter. Along the way Sam encounters Jorge, a 17 year old Mexican boy. Jorge is desperately trying to rescue his abducted younger sister who was kidnapped by human traffickers and forced into prostitution. Jorge sneaks into United States when he discovers that she has been transported into the United States by an international network of sex traffickers. Sam and Jorge form an alliance in this thrilling story of courage and a depiction of one of the world’s most heinous crimes, human trafficking slavery. The movie is based on the book, “The Girls Next Door” by Peter Landsman. In 2004, “Trade” was featured on the cover of The New York Times.
January is also National Human Trafficking month and the move, “Trade” is an important reminder of the real horrors of human trafficking; showing how vulnerable are young teens, and an inside look at the deplorable business-side of human trafficking. “Many of us do not realize that human trafficking is a huge world-wide business, ranking second to drug trafficking and the presently US is the biggest buyer!” exclaims Annie Garrison, president of CAHT.
The movie starts at 1 pm and is free and open to the public. Please note that CAHT’s regular general meeting this month will be in the Florida Room at SCC central campus and not at the United Methodist Church. There will be a social time starting at 12:30 with movie snacks available and a 50/50 raffle to raise needed funds for CAHT’s programs in helping support human trafficking victims and education programs at our local schools, churches and other organizations.
